Application for Training Course

Shelley Sailing Club as a Yachting Australia Training Centre aims to attract young sailors to sailing and retain them to adult life.

Sailors build self-confidence and self-reliance, team skills and interdependence in a competitive environment. Sailing craft operate with finesse in changing conditions. Races are played out with strategy and rules of engagement. Courses run each Sunday morning at 9am.

Logbook: Each sailor has a logbook of course accreditations and sailing experiences to build a history record.

Development Options: Development Program facilitates Get Into Small Boat Sailing Courses (GISBS) accredited by Yachting Australia:

Beginners listen attentively to Instructor Janet Jerwood 1. The Beginner Sailor Program ($180 plus membership, equipment is supplied). New sailors learn on Mudlarks or Minnows in Convict Bay. A nine-week course starts in October and in January. Successful participants achieve GISBS Basic Skills I and II. Course numbers are limited so register your interest early. Adult training courses may be held in January using Herons depending on demand.

2. Experienced Sailor Program (complimentary for members). New and experienced Mudlark and Minnow sailors communicate in common language, reinforcing sailing ideas and techniques in pre-race sessions. Weekly training and assessment. Successful participants achieve GISBS Better Sailing.

3. Competitive Racing Sailor Program. (Fee $110 per boat). Advancing from Basic Skills and Better Sailing we move onto more specific Racing Skills and techniques. Held in conjunction with our morning racing we provide specialised training on a range of topics including sailing fitness, advanced boat handling, sail tuning and control, understanding and using the rules, and strategy around the race course. Successful participants will be accredited with the National Small Boat Sailing Scheme Racing Skills 1 certificate. We anticipate participants would join in with the afternoon racing fleets to give them an opportunity to demonstrate and refine the skills taught. Weekly theory and training is often followed by a short race (not held during away events and state heats).

All courses start on the first Sunday after opening day....9am – 12pm
